Engaging employees with chronic illness

More than a third of the workforce has at least one chronic illness. That’s right. One in three!

There are two factors that keep people with chronic illness from being engaged at work. One is their physical illness. The second is their mental and emotional RESPONSE to that illness. What are you doing to help manage that response so that these employees stay engaged and productive?

At Sick with Success® we have identified three key areas that need to be addressed.

Communication:

One of the biggest issues is the misunderstanding of chronic illness in the work environment. When employees see that their manager or co-workers “don’t get it” they try to hide their illness. This keeps them from seeking out solutions to improve their own productivity and engagement. In fact it’s a trillion dollar problem.

The Solution: Train your Managers. Train your Employees.

Energy:

Having an employee simply show up for work and warm a chair all day (because they are fatigued or in pain) is a luxury that few organizations can afford these days. How much money are you losing by ignoring the root causes of employee disengagement?

Balance:

Balance is important for sustainability. Balancing the needs of your employee and your organzation can create a sustainable system for success. You can help your employees with chronic illness become better engaged. I know. I did it with my own employees and won national and international awards in the process.
