I often talk about high performance and high performers on this site, but what do those terms mean? How can you spot a high performer? Here are ten ways I can think of:
A high performer is results-oriented – meaning they judge themselves not on how many hours they put in but what they have accomplished.
A high performer never misses a deadline.
A high performer wants to understand the big picture.
A high performer will ask questions if they don’t know.
A high performer will identify and fix problems before you are aware the problem exists.
A high performer is creative but realistic.
A high performer over-produces.
A high performer isn’t in it for the money.
A high performer isn’t watching the clock.
A high performer can be left alone to get the job done.
Because the high performer is results-oriented and independent, does it not make sense for their managers to be flexible with them in terms of hours in the office, sick days, and working from home?
This is particularly important if they have a chronic illness or family issues to tend to. By being flexible and trusting them you will often get loyalty and even better performance in the end.
What is your take on the high performer? Would you add any attributes that I have missed?
