Lasting confidence and change
Have you ever attended a motivational seminar or read an inspirational book and immediately afterwards felt confident and ready for positive changes in your life? How long did that feeling last? For many it does not last long.
One of the reasons for this is that our thoughts and beliefs are complicated. We may really want that big promotion, but our inner critic worries about whether we can handle the new challenge or whether we really are worth that much money.
We all know people who are intelligent and work hard but seem to sabotage themselves and their careers regularly. This is often due to limiting beliefs about their capabilities as well as feelings of being unworthy of success.
People diagnosed with chronic illness may somehow feel they are been punished for something and act in ways that keep them from achieving their full potential.
So as you can see, coming up with a plan to make you feel motivated and confident in your abilities requires a buy-in from your whole self, not just your conscious mind.
Ericksonian hypnosis helps you get that buy-in. It allows you to push aside your limiting beliefs – giving you the ability to access that motivation and confidence for years to come, whatever the situation, in a way that is appropriate for you.
If you are going to make positive changes in your life, you want those positive changes to last!
What is Ericksonian Hypnosis?
Ericksonian hypnosis is built on the principles and language patterns of one of the most successful therapists in history – Dr. Milton H. Erickson.
Unlike the more dramatic types of hypnosis that you see on the stage or TV, Ericksonian hypnosis is built upon conversation and the rapport between the client and the practitioner.
Most of these conversations will not feel like hypnosis at all because you will be awake and fully aware of what is going on. The “hypnosis” may simply consist of a story or a question designed to engage the vast creative resources of your mind that are outside of your immediate awareness.
Ericksonian hypnosis forms part of the basis of Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP.
Executives and high-level athletes have used NLP for years to improve their performance and confidence. They also use it to help in decision-making, negotiation and communication.
If I am being coached, do I have to be hypnotized?
No. Coaching does not have to be done with a hypnosis element.
So how does it work?
Certain language patterns can be used to trigger the creative part of your brain that we will, for simplicity sake, call your unconscious.
Research has shown that your unconscious is able to do two to three million tasks at once. Think of your heartbeat, your breathing, the production of white blood cells, the creation of enzymes in your liver. The unconscious mind does so many things.
Your unconscious mind is there when you drive (allowing you to effortlessly take in thousands of bits of information) or when you play a musical instrument, or when you participate in sports - even when you tie your shoes!
These things all take time to learn but once they filter into your unconscious mind they become effortless. This is why you only have to learn how to ride a bicycle once.
Think of all the other things you have learned over the years. Wouldn’t it be nice if they ALL became just as effortless at tying your shoes?
By triggering your unconscious mind with the right stories or questions I can help you access those vast creative resources so that you can more easily use the skills you already have.
If it was developed by a psychiatrist is it psychotherapy?
No. Ericksonian hypnosis has many uses outside of therapy including, but not limited to; inspiring positive change, improving memory, as well as improving performance, learning and confidence.
I do not diagnose or treat any disease, be it mental or physical. I do help people find a path of action in their lives that keeps them balanced, happy, productive and growing in a way that is right for them.
How is it done? Is it dangerous? Can I get stuck?
Ericksonian hypnosis is extremely safe and can even be done over the phone. It is no more dangerous that watching television or listening to music. Only positive suggestions are used. Your mind will reject any suggestions it does not believe are in your best interest.
The suggestions will allow you to change and adapt in a beneficial way – so that when your life changes you have the resources to deal with the changes quickly and easily, actually making you more independent.
How does it fit into coaching? Do I have to pay extra for hypnosis?
Ericksonian hypnosis can fit into coaching seamlessly. Both involve asking profound questions and listening openly and honestly to the answers.
More traditional hypnosis techniques can be used upon mutual agreement within the coaching session. There is no extra charge.
Is hypnosis good for relaxation?
Is it ever! If you wish, I can help you go into a relaxing and re-juvenating trance that will make you feel well rested, refreshed and ready to take on the day. Trance is also a great way to prepare your unconscious mind for learning or study and can be used just before or immediately after a course or seminar.
How much do you know about hypnosis?
I am a certified practitioner of Ericksonian Hypnosis, having learned my skills from legendary hypnotist Dr. Mike Mandel at NLP Canada.
