Workshop: Engaging employees with chronic health conditions

Thriving in the Age of Chronic Illness

Based on the groundbreaking book by Sick with Success® founder Jason Reid, this interactive workshop reveals how our outdated views of illness cost organizations billions of dollars in lost productivity. Participants will learn about the new paradigm of illness, and examine ways to reduce stigma so that employees feel free to access the resources they need to be more engaged in their jobs. Participants will also come away with simple, but powerful action items to engage employees with chronic health challenges and increase productivity and engagement.

This program can be a great addition to your disability management or leadership training initiative.  It can also be an important addition to your diversity training.

Educate your organizational leaders and improve productivity!

Session Abstract:

For the first time in history, chronic illness has overtaken acute disease as the major health problem across Canada and around the world.

The latest data suggests that 1 in 3 working-aged Canadians suffer from at least one chronic condition. That number is expected to rise due to the aging workforce.

Many organizations now have employee assistance, wellness programs, or other resources for their employees. However, these resources are wasted if the employee doesn’t acknowledge their illness and come forward. Furthermore, many strategies developed by organizations to deal with the impact of illness on productivity are no longer effective.

The learning objectives of this session are to:

  • Understand the crucial differences between chronic and acute illness and why chronic conditions require different workplace strategies.
  • Look at the role that stigma and misunderstanding plays in keeping employees with chronic illness from being fully engaged and how to reduce these effects.
  • Identify key tools to increase productivity for employees with chronic illness.
